Comparing The Differences Between ATVs And Motorcycles As Off Road Vehicles As Modes Of Transport
All terrain vehicles or ATVs and motorcycles as a mode of transport can be quite similar. Both are a form of motorized bikes. In each case the drivers sits astride the vehicle and makes use of handlebars to control speed and to steer. There are a number of differences between the two types of transportation.
First of all are the numbers of wheels that are present on each type of vehicle. ATVs more commonly known as quad bikes and generally have four wheels, but may also be three-wheelers as well, whereas motorbikes have two wheels. The extra wheels on the quad bikes gives greater stability for the driver at slow speeds and over rough terrain, whereas the motorbikes, just as with bicycles require the rider to balance on the two wheels. Increased skill is needed on motorcycles at slow speeds.
The invention times of the vehicles as differs. Motorcycles where first invented by Gottileb Daimler in 1885, by modifying a wooden bike with the attachment of a gas engine. It was not until a century later that the ATV was invented. The four-wheeled ATVs only came into existence in 1982 and were used for beginners as a recreational machine.
Passengers are not allowed on quad bikes because the movement of bike is partially dependent on the readjusting of the weight of the driver. Therefore a passenger would interfere with these subtle but necessary changes increasing the possibility of accidents occurring. Motorcycles on the other hand are safer for transporting passengers.
ATVs tend to be bigger than motorbikes and so need more space in storage and while transporting them. Their transportation is necessary because it is illegal to drive on public roads with an ATV. This requires specialized trailers and ramps, to which the ATVs may be strapped onto and the ramps make for easy access on and off the trailer. Motorbikes can be driven on public roads or transported via trailers.
In terms of serious injuries and deaths the use of ATVs causes more than their two-wheeled off road counterparts, dirt bikes. This is mainly due to the weight of the quad bikes and the fact that if they land on the driver during an accident then they can crush him. There are also no regulations that state that the driver of a quad must wear a helmet at all times and so most do not. It is compulsory though for an off road biker to wear a helmet though.
Both types of vehicles have got a range of engine sizes depending on the amount of power that the driver wants. Both also have smaller sizes available for children to ride. It is advisable that children ride with adult supervision and whilst wearing the right safety gear, particularly helmets.
